Lawsuit Against Nike

Mary Cain, a former professional middle-distance runner and high school star, has sued Alberto Salazar and Nike, her longtime professional coach and the shoe company that sponsored her, for $20 million.

When Cain was 17 years old, she joined the Salazar-supervised Nike Oregon Project after breaking several high school records and making the world championships that year. The complaint claims that four years of physical and emotional torture followed.

Salazar is characterized in the complaint as being overbearing and preoccupied with his weight, and he had a propensity to publicly humiliate Cain by having her step on a scale in front of other people—then condemning her if the result was not to his taste. Nike apparently knew about it but did nothing to help Cain.
